Talk about a wild ride! "Girl, Interrupted" is an outstanding biography about a young woman's journey inside a psych ward of the late 1960's. From interesting real life people to overbearing staff, this book is sure to make you dwell on psych practices of the 60's.
I found myself immersed inside the mind of Susanna Kaysen as she described, so vividly, her experiences inside this mental home. I found most interesting her self-perception and how she viewed herself as a mental basket case stuck inside a "looney bin". I admire how her descriptions of her the characters in her story are so real to me. The visualization I get when I think about her friends in the asylum are intriguing, yet haunting. To be able to see mental illness through the words of a woman who has experienced herself far exceeds that of a Doctor. I feel this is because the information is raw and verbatim. You will surely find this riveting account worth the read.
Hi Hayden!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog design! It looks amazing! I know that they made a movie of this book, but I never watched it. Your short, but just enough, description of the book makes me want to go find it and read it right away. If you like reading about patients in the mental ward, have you read "It's Kind of A Funny Story" by Ned Vizzini? It's similar to "Girl, Interrupted" but with a darker humor. I also recommend "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest".
Overall, nice blog!
I have never heard of this book. However, it really sounds interesting and also really sad. It is so surreal. It must be good. So what you do think your students will learn from this book? Overall good work!
